Protecting your Glow and Vibrance!

We often associate a glowing complexion with good health, but skin color from being in the sun- or in a tanning booth- actually accelerates the affects of aging and increases your risk for developing skin cancer. Sun exposure causes most of the damage to the skin that we associate with as normal aging. Over time the sun's ultraviolet light damages the fibers in the skin called elastin. When the fibers breakdown, the skin begins to sag, stretch, and lose it's ability to go back into place after stretching. The skin also bruises and tears more easily-taking longer to heal. So while sun damage to skin may not be apparent when your young, it will definitely be later in life.

Exposure to the sun causes:

Pre-cancerous and cancerous skin lesions caused by loss of the skins immune function.

Benign tumors

Fine and course wrinkles

Freckles

Discoloration of the skin called mottled pigmentation

A yellow discoloration of the skin

Telangiectasias- the dilation of small blood vessels under the skin

Elastosis- the destruction of the elastic tissue causing lines and wrinkles

Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells. This rapid growth results in tumors, which are either benign or malignant. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun is the number one cause of skin cancer, but UV light from tanning beds are just as harmful. Cumulative sun exposure causes mainly basal cell and squamous cell skin cancer, while episodes of severe sunburns, usually before the age of 18, can cause melanoma later in life.

The most common warning sign for skin cancer is a change on the skin, typically a new mole or skin lesion, or a change in an existing mole. Skin rejuvenating supplements can play a big role in the prevention of skin cancer and the treatment of it as well. Supplements such as

EPA-DHA

Vitamin D &

Antioxidants like:

Vitamin C

Vitamin E & A

And Beta-Cerotene

all help in the prevention and treatment of melanoma.

Although this all may seem scary there are several things you can do to prevent skin cancer. Nothing can completely undo skin damage, but taking the proper precautions now can help keep you on the path of prevention. Follow these tips to help prevent skin cancer.

Apply a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 that is a broad base sunscreen with titanium or zinc oxide because it is better not to have a sunscreen that is not chemically based. You can also find make ups with SPF, as well as moisturizers. Apply the sunscreen at least 30 minutes before sun exposure and then every so often there after.

Avoid direct sun exposure as much as possible during peak UV radiation times between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm.

Perform regularly skin self-exams to become familiar with existing growths and to be aware of any changing or new growths.

As a parent; be a good role model and teach skin cancer prevention habits in your child/children.
